In an effort to get more townsfolk involved in the solution to problems with crime and related issues, the Pittsburg Police Department is going to try and revitalize the Neighborhood Watch Program inside the City of Pittsburg. This program has proved invaluable in other areas, it was once active in some areas in Pittsburg, and it is something worth getting going again in every part of town.
The new initiative is part of a department strategy to get the community more involved with the Police Department and the Officers out in the public in a more of a collaborative role. The department held an organizational meeting on this a few years ago and there was not enough interest to get anything started. Since that time there have been people in the community who have said they would support the programs and wanted to see us conduct a National Night Out campaign.
The Department is going all out to make this happen. The city is divided into four reporting districts and someone from the Department has been assigned to each district to define areas that can be set up for the watch groups, identify people willing to serve as Block captains or coordinators, and set up meeting places. A map of reporting districts has been placed on the web site and information about meeting times and places will be posted as well.
UPDATE: As a result of the organizational meetings there have been watch groups meeting to form in Quail Hollow- Carpenter Addition- Jefferson Street/Pecan Grove- and Kentwood More meetings are to follow. |
