The Animal Control Officer (ACO) is responsible for enforcing the local ordinances and state laws related to animals both domestic and wild. The ACO has the authority to seize stray animals or animals at large and impound them. The ACO also enforces ordinances and laws relating to vaccinations, leash laws, proper housing and fencing for animals, vicious animals, and investigating cases of animal bites and animal cruelty.

The City of Pittsburg operates an animal impound facility at the Pittsburg Veterinary Clinic located at 203 North Greer Blvd. Anyone interested in adopting an animal may call the ACO at the Police Department or the Vet Clinic at 903-856-6518.

The ACO is also responsible for picking up dead animals from the roadways and right of ways within the City of Pittsburg, the ACO can not remove dead animals from private property.

Regarding the disposal of dead animals except for livestock on private property.

The owner is responsible for removing and properly disposing of a deceased animal within twenty-four hours of the death of the animal. The owner may request that the animal control office pick up a deceased animal if the animal has been placed in a sealed plastic bag and left in a convenient place adjacent to a public roadway.
